People lose keys all the time. Most times, you “lost” a key only for you to find it somewhere weird. When you first can’t find it, you might panic – especially if you do not have a spare.
I want to describe what to do if you lost your car keys and do not have a spare.
Let’s explore the steps you take, and how each different car key type will result in different action taken.
What to Do if i lost my car keys?

If you lose your car keys, first look for the area you were when you lost them. If you’re still unable to find it, your next step would be calling for a locksmith to come gain entry into your car. A locksmith can usually either make you a new key or break into the vehicle for you without a key.
If it’s a newer car and you have lost your car keys without a spare, you have to call the dealership to make you new car keys and program the keys to the car’s immobilizer system. Depending on the type of vehicle you have, you may have to tow the car to the dealership location.
Here is a list of some steps to take if you lose your car keys. Further within the article, you will find what to do based on the type of car key for your vehicle.
#1. Search Quickly.
Once you know your car keys are missing, you want to check the area right away. Take a breath and retrace your steps. Many times the keys are right in front of you and you won’t need to move on.
If the keys are found, move to my last recommendation of getting a spare right when the fright is fresh in your mind. If you are unable to locate the keys, time to take the next step.
#2. Check Your Car.
Once you’ve checked your house – or wherever you are – you can now check the car if you’re parked somewhere that allows you to do so. Many people will inadvertently leave their keys in the car just from forgetting while out and about.
Hopefully, you find the keys in your car and something simple like already taking the keys out of your pocket, purse, or bag.
If the keys are in your car, it’s time to get a spare made. If the keys are not in your car, continue to make new keys.
#3. Collect Your Car Details.
You will need the following information whether you go to a locksmith or your local car dealership. Without this information, they will not be able to give you a key that works.
You’ll need to first be able to identify what type of key you use (more on this in a minute). In addition you will need the vehicle identification number (VIN) located on the dash or on the driver side door jamb. It does not hurt to write down the year, make, and model of your vehicle too.
#4. Get a New Key.
At this stage, you will need to determine if you want the car dealership to prepare your key or if you want to work with your local locksmith. In general, if you own an older car, you would work with a locksmith instead of a car dealership as to save money.
Newer car models may require you to work with a dealership. With new technologies, the best option may be to have the dealer prepare your key so you can be sure it will work. Yes, this will cost you significantly more, but it will also save you a lot of headaches.
#5. Get a Spare Key.
Once you get a new key, you should get a spare key too. It may end up being easier to just order two keys.
With your spare key, you won’t have to go through this level of panic again! The next time you lose your key, you will at least have one key on hand so you are not stuck having to replace your key before you can get moving again.
What to do based on the car key type?
Unsurprisingly, all car keys are not the same. You might have one of these types. We will lay out what the differences are and tell you how to get them replaced.
#1. Traditional Car Key.
You will see a traditional metal key in older cars, and many new lower-cost vehicles also have this type. It is the automotive key you put in the ignition and turn to start the engine.
You can have a traditional key replaced by any locksmith. They will come to your location and cut a new key while you wait. You also have the option to pay for the key to be transported to a locksmith for you, saving you money compared to getting a replacement from the dealership.
#2. Car Key Fob.
At first, the key fob was thought of as an “add-on” to the key. The fob was used to lock and unlock it, however, the traditional key was still needed to start the vehicle.
If you only lose the key fob, you can still use your vehicle. Just unlock and lock the doors for now with the traditional key. Also, fobs can be easily purchased at any auto parts store, dealership, or online as they also have many options that can be easily programmed.
#3. Car Key Fob With Switchblade Key.
If your car key fob has a key attached and you lose the whole set, you will need to take action. The fob contains your spring-loaded key inside of it, which means you no longer have a way to start your vehicle.
Your best bet is contacting the dealership to get a replacement fob. They will cut the key and reprogram a new fob.
#4. Smart Key.
The keyless ignition comes with a smart key that works together with the start button in your vehicle. Thanks to a proximity sensor, your vehicle knows when the smart key is nearby and will turn on.
Again, if you lose a smart key you will need to either tow it to the dealership or have someone get you at the location. A new smart key must be paired to the car electronics, and it can be very expensive.
#5. Transponder Key.
In the 1990s, transponder keys appeared. These keys have a plastic head and have a computer chip inside. To start the vehicle, a wireless connection between the key and the vehicle must be established.
If you lose this key, you’ll face a more difficult problem. The car must be towed to your local dealership, and you must show proof of ownership before the dealership will provide you with a new key.
The cut key must pair with your car’s computer to function, and if the dealership is busy, you may not get your car back for several days.
