You will see other helpful information on this label including the gross vehicle weight, tire specifications, and other specs.

2. VIN Check.

If you can’t find the label or just want another option, you could perform an online VIN check. Use the VIN located on the dashboard plate or inside the driver’s side door jamb.

Enter this VIN on a reputable VIN check website to get specs for your vehicle. A VIN check can help you get some history on your car as well.

3. Owner’s Manual.

One of the best resources can be your vehicle’s owner’s manual. There should be recommended service schedule and specs for your vehicle.

There will be a table that includes the curb weight for the model. However, it may not be broken down to provide the specific curb weight with all of the equipment the truck has, so you may need to explore one of the other options for the actual number.

4. Dealer.

As a last resort, you can check with your local dealer. If you purchased the truck from them, they should have a record of that which provides the curb weight.

Otherwise, they could locate the curb weight in their system using the VIN. They should be able to provide a detailed curb weight of the truck and include all of the equipment you have on it.

Vehicle Weight Ratings Explained

#1. Dry Weight.

Most people don’t care too much about the dry weight; it’s a figure given by the manufacturer of the vehicle that isn’t a full view of “weight.”

You also have to be aware that dry weight is not measured uniformly; for example, some manufacturers take off pretty much all fluids (i.e. oil, washer fluid, etc.), while other manufacturers may just take off the fuel.

#2. Curb Weight.

The curb weight is what the vehicle is rated at when it leaves the manufacturer. It is the weight of the vehicle – if you pulled it onto a scale after it was built, and you filled it with a tank of fuel.

Curb weight is always the weight of the vehicle, along with any equipment that is specific to the truck you purchased, along with the engine size and the package you bought.

#3. Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR).

In many cases, the GVWR is more important for you to care about than the curb weight. The GVWR number incorporates the curb weight of the vehicle and all additional passengers and cargo the vehicle is permitted to hold.

If you only think about the curb weight of the truck you may get yourself into some trouble. It doesn’t take much to exceed your limits by just putting a whole bunch of people and/or stuff into the truck.

#4. Payload.

The tongue weight rating indicates you how much weight may be placed on the hitch itself. If the hitch exceeds its weight, it can snap off the rear and potentially lead to costly damages.

#7. Gross Combined Weight Rating (GCWR).

The GCWR of the truck is going to be the combination of the GTW and the GVWR. GCWR is going to provide you the better weight rating for the combination.

With the GCWR, you are also looking at the weight rating in total for the vehicle and its passengers. It incorporates the payload of the truck with the weight of the cargo and the trailer, all as agrate that is associated with GCWR.

#8. Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR).

With the GAWR, you are provided a weight rating for each axle. The number indicates what the limits are for the front and rear axel separately.

In most cases, you are not going to add a large amount more onto the front axle. This axle already bears a significant burden as it carries the engine and transmission. The rear axle will typically be the one that is weighed down the most with the tongue weight of the trailer and the payload burden.
